How did Ayiti aka the enfant terrible of the Caribbean—the first nation to permanently ban slavery—become the world’s bête noir? SHE chants & spits lyrics testifying to the spectacle of those 4 dangerous little Os and our vulgar human obsession with categorization and hierarchy, SHE pleads to Gede—Gad sa vivan yo fe mwen! Look at what the mortals have done! And they certainly continue to do things… 222 years later, #SAMO.
Gina Athena Ulysse is an artist and scholar, Professor of Humanities, and Founding Director of the Rasanblaj Praxis Project Lab at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In her interdisciplinary work, she brings together art, writing, and research, engaging questions of geopolitics, history, aesthetics, and the spiritual dimensions of Black diasporic life worlds. Her major publications include "Why Haiti Needs New Narratives" (2015), "Because When God is Too Busy" (2017), and "A Call to Rasanblaj" (2023). Her work has been presented at venues including the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and MoMA. She was an invited artist at the Biennale of Sydney (2020) and the Biennale de Dakar (2024).
