Leonore Mau’s photographs of Haiti reveal her fixation on Vodou, a tradition she regarded as both fascinating and fearsome. At times, Mau respected Haitian devotees by observing appropriate ritual protocol but also violated Vodou’s code of conduct (regleman), creating disorder in her documentation of private ceremonies. Ultimately, this lecture highlights how Leonore Mau’s archive of Haitian Vodou photographs exhibit how delicately she tread a thin line between love and fear of this African heritage tradition.
