They were last spotted in the heart of Munich, at the Lenbachhaus: coal beetles crawling up to the surface from their former habitat, the mining shafts in the Ruhr region. Due to global warming and the rising local water level, they could no longer remain down there. They have now spread across Central Europe and have even been spotted in Munich. So far, there is little known about the likely unique abilities of these remarkable crawlers. One thing is certain: they are here now and are settling in on the surface. In a joint initiative, we are welcoming them and finding out what the beetles need.

“In the Glow of the Coal Beetles” is an Anna Kpok project in collaboration with the Fidena Festival 2026, supported by the LWL Cultural Foundation, the City of Bochum and the Kemnader District as part of the Kulturlinie.Ruhr initiative.
