Dan Flavin
untitled (for Ksenija)

–
From Friday, August 15, the exhibition "Dan Flavin, untitled (for Ksenija)" can be visited at Kunstbau.
The Kunstbau, designed in 1994 by the architectural firm Uwe Kiessler + Partner, was opened in the same year. The site-specific work "untitled (for Ksenija)" was the first artwork presented in the Kunstbau. Along the four architecturally defined lighting rails, industrial fluorescent lamps in green, blue, yellow, and pink are installed — the only artistic material Flavin had used since the mid-1960s.
The light installation forms a symbiosis with the architecture, and through its arrangement along the lighting rails, it establishes a connection to the subway station below. "untitled (for Ksenija)" transforms the floor, walls, and the bodies of visitors into glowing compositions, creating a light-filled experiential space where light, color, space, and the human body engage in an inseparable interplay.
Heiner and Philippa Friedrich donated "untitled (for Ksenija)" to the Lenbachhaus in memory of their parents, Erika and Harald Friedrich, as well as Dominique and John de Menil. The installation is firmly anchored in the collection and will now be presented for the tenth time in accordance with the donors’ wishes.
