Paul Klee (winter of 2005–2006)

The cabinet exhibition “Paul Klee—Botanisches Theater” on display in the winter of 2005–2006 occasioned a close inspection of Klee’s Botanical Theater. Begun in 1924 and completed in 1934, the painting presents numerous paint layers and a variety of technical peculiarities. Careful study of the painting and photographic documentation of our findings provided insight into Klee’s sensitive and idiosyncratic creative technique.
The results of our study were published in Paul Klee: Botanisches Theater, ed. Helmut Friedel, with essays by Barbara Eschenburg and Iris Winkelmeyer (Munich, 2005), online available here.
