Materials with a particle size of 1 to 100 nanometers have been widely known as Nanomaterials. Its application for restoration is being researched in the "Nanoforart" project (Nano-materials for the conservation and preservation of movable and immovable artworks) with the support of the European Union. The application is not limited to a single conservation discipline and challenges everyone to rethink familiar methods, as the focus here is on the physical methods. Nano-materials exhibit characteristics that are peculiar and different than those of bulk materials. This can result in enhanced chemical, electrical, magnetic and optical properties that are advantageous for numerous applications. The collaboration of many conservators have advanced and developed applications from consolidation, introducing materials into papers, paint layers and walls, as well as physically splitting of delicate materials and surfaces.

The Lenbachhaus offers a free professional training course for conservator-restorers as well as for anyone interested in this topic.
This introduction to the approaches and theory of Nanomaterials in conservation will take up the whole morning. You are invite to log-in digitally or to come to the lecture in the Knorrsaal/Lenbachhaus Munich. The lecture will be held in English.
