The Lenbachhaus's collection was established in 1924 and has grown continually over the past century. Works entered the collection from a wide variety of sources. Some were acquired individually after careful deliberation; in other instances, the museum received entire bodies of work. During the Nazi era, too, there were numerous accessions. That is why the collection reflects the museum’s eventful history, from the Weimar Republic through National Socialism and down to the present.

It is inevitable, then, that our holdings include verbal and visual representations that are demeaning, racist, and anti-Semitic. We are alert to the fact that by showing and quoting discriminatory language and depictions, we always also reproduce the ideologies with which they are bound up. We have made every effort to filter out these works. We prefer to show them only when we believe they are especially apt to help our audiences understand a historical context and form a critical opinion. In these instances, we see it as part of our mission to preface the works with an appropriate explanation and contextualization. Needless to say, we are prepared to provide access to these works upon request—as an institution, we are committed not only to preserving the historic sources but also to promoting debate about them.

The Collection Online's objective is therefore to provide access to the greatest possible number of artifacts housed at the museum. Complementing them with in-depth information and recent scholarly findings is an ongoing process. We have chosen to include works in the Collection Online that we know or have reason to suspect were looted or otherwise illegitimately taken from their rightful owners. While we are proactively working to resolve these cases, we want to allow others to find the works.

That is why we would like to ask you to contact us with any suggestions or observations you may have, which are a valuable source of support for us. If you notice any objects or texts that are problematic or concerning which you would like to share information with us, please use the feedback function.
