Installation with 80 musicians
in cooperation with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
an event held as part of the 2017 Kunstarealfest

In this project organized in cooperation with the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the composer Ari Benjamin Meyers (b. New York, 1972) examines the question of how to exhibit the complexity of an orchestra—a sizable ensemble organized in accordance with a fixed placement of instruments that always appears as a cohesive group and is typically directed by a conductor. Meyers is working on a new composition and will arrange a several-hours-long performative installation of the entire orchestra in the Lenbachhaus’s galleries.

The installation’s emphasis will be on the visitor’s encounter with the orchestra’s individual musicians. Surrounded by music, the audience will roam the orchestral space for a novel experience of the orchestra as a living "tableau" very different from a typical concert evening. The entire Lenbachhaus with all rooms will be transformed into the scene of an unprecedented orchestra performance.
