An Evening with Coco Fusco: Talk and screening
Saturday, July 15, 7pm

Lenbachhaus
Admission free

The Cuban-American artist Coco Fusco two of whose works are currently on view in the exhibition "After the Fact. Propaganda in the 21st Century" will give an introduction into her practice. As part of the evening, Fusco's and Paula Heredia's video "The Couple in the Cage: Guatianaui Odyssey" (1993, 31 min.) will be screened. It shows Coco Fusco and performance co-creator Guillermo Gómez-Peña in a series of 1992 performances. They decked themselves out in "primitive" costumes and appeared before the public as "undiscovered AmerIndians" locked in a golden cage – an exercise in faux anthropology based on racist images of natives. Presented eight times in four different countries, these simple performances evoked various responses, the most startling being the huge numbers of people who didn't find the idea of "natives" locked in a cage objectionable. This provocative video, directed and produced by Coco Fusco and Paula Heredia, suggests that the "primitive" is nothing more than a construction of the West and uses comic fiction to address historical truths and tragedies.

Lecture

From Propaganda to Fake News: Deception, Manipulation and Truth in the Contemporary Media Environment
by Piers Robinson

Thu, September 7, 2017, 7pm
at Lenbachhaus, Georg-Knorr-Auditorium
Admission free

Political debate is today dominated by concerns over fake news and political manipulation. And yet, for the best part of the past hundred years, Western publics have been exposed to widespread and systematic persuasion campaigns, often involving deception and manipulation. In his lecture Piers Robinson will pose the questions of how we come to be manipulated by such campaigns and (how/if) we can defend ourselves against them.

Prof. Dr. Piers Robinson is Chair in Politics, Society and Political Journalism in the Department of Journalism Studies at the University of Sheffield (UK). Previosuly, he was Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Manchester (2005-2011) as well as Lecturer in Political Communication at the University of Liverpool (1999-2005). His research focus is the nexus of communication, media and world politics with particular attention on areas and strategies of conflict and war.
