SYMPOSIUM

Symposium on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Franz Marc’s death
Fri, July 1 – Sat, July 2, 2016

at Lenbachhaus and Franz Marc Museum, Kochel am See

“How indescribable all these things are. How indescribably beautiful.”
(Franz Marc 1915)

The 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Marc, who fell near Verdun on March 4,  1916, takes place in 2016. For the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See and the Lenbachhaus in Munich this is an appropriate occasion to hold a symposium on Franz Marc.

The symposium is linked to the idea of looking at Franz Marc’s art in a different way and asking new questions – about his love of animals for example. The sources of Marc’s work and his way-of-thinking are also to be discussed. What did he see and read? What did he suppress in his self-expression; what made Nietzsche, Flaubert and Tolstoy interesting to him? And how German was Marc? On what did he base the notion of a ‘defining German cultural identity’ that he formulated during the war? Why are he and his works only to be found in Germany and in virtually no other European museums?

The symposium begins on Friday, 1 July 2016, at the Lenbachhaus in Munich and continues the following day, 2 July 2016, at the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See.

The symposium will be held in german.
